I have used OPENcpn with a serial usb adapter with no problems in ubuntu.

Plug the gps in and open a terminal and type lsusb

https://www.u-blox.com/sites/default...%29_Public.pdf

Chapter 7 is the serial stuff. If you have the windows driver, try finding the .inf file, open with a text editor and poke around.

I don't have one of these ublox7's so I'm kinda winging it here.

I think what is happening is the usb is turning this into a serial port.

Hopefully the lsusb will say something about enumerating ttyUSB(X)

Once you figure out what "serial port" it thinks it is, then you "should" be able to point openCPN to that and you "should" have navigation.

I've put "" around a few things because reality sometimes doesn't go as planned.

I am guessing there is a light on the usb thing that blinks or changes color when its connected. You may need sudo if you get permission denied. Try cat /dev/ttyUSB(number it thinks it is).

Hopefully you will get a screen full of readable NEMA strings. If you get giberish it means the serial parameters N,8,1 and or baud rate are not correct. You will have to use the man page for screen to try different things or peek in the manual and see if you can find it. Once you get the right parameters, I think "set serial" is the command you would need to make work.

Keep a list of what you tried. The set serial may get reset on a reboot but there are ways to add it in to make it stick.
