How to password protect a webpage in godaddy

Hello all. It's been a while. I have a question and is about web management. I have a web application hosted on GoDaddy. Share hosting. And I want secure the entry point to the app which is index.html. I have tried .htaccess but it doesn't work. The app is inside a directory which is a subdirectory of a WordPress installation. I don't know if this matters. But every time I use .htaccess WordPress takes over and displays "page error" has anyone done something like this?

I don't use WP, but this looks promising.

In WordPress, you can make a page password-protected. https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/

where did you put the .htaccess, what does it contain, has there been one before that you just added sth to or diud you create a new one?
are you saying .htaccess does not work at all (possible)?
or can you make some .htaccess stuff work, just not the password protection (called simple auth iirc)?
it should be near-trivial to protect the directory and all its subdirectories.

"Doesn't work", does not tell us anything at all about why it may not be working.

The links provided by others most likely contain information helpful to you, in particular the WP links.

If your problem is not yet solved and you still need help, please provide a more complete description of what you have tried, the contents and location of your .htaccess and the details of the results.

Please review the Site FAQ for guidance in posting your questions and general forum usage. Especially, read the link in that page, How To Ask Questions The Smart Way. The more effort you put into understanding your problem and framing your questions, the better others can help!
