Thumbs up Hello from SA

I am currently locked in South Africa, no flights to the UK until at least March.
I'm using the time to reacquaint myself to Linux (using Scientific Linux).
I first cut my teeth on Red Hat linux in 1988.

Greetings, chonsp, and welcome to LQ!

Did you mean 1998 rather then 1988? Anyway, you're certainly not a newcomer to GNU/Linux.

Either that, or they're lying since Linux didn't exist until 1991...

Never accuse new friends of lying. Your 1st part was perfect. Yes, I mispoke. I was having a senior moment and was trying to post so I could move on.
It could have been 89, eighty nine, and I think the product was called Santa Cruz Unix. Anyone else cut there teeth on that. I had a dozen terminals running Word and Lotus 123 compatible sessions.
Best

Who said we were "friends" ?
Unix isn't Linux - you said "I first cut my teeth on Red Hat linux in 1988." in your OP. Linus didn't simply just copy Unix code, he wrote the Linux kernel from scratch because he liked Unix's design. So yes, Linux is "Unix-like" as it does resemble Unix to a large degree, but that doesn't make it Unix itself though - as it's not Unix. Santa Cruz Unix is not Linux, period. And none of SCO's lawsuits against Linux have been upheld either, by the way.

I feel like you were poorly treated chonsp but maybe I misunderstand the replies.

Anyway, howdy! Welcome to LQ.

Thank you. We all sometimes respond badly pre-coffee, post beer, or just occasionally we're in a crappy mood.
I have been using various flavours of 'IX' for a long time. I love the community spirit.
