Frank, what about flux's own tool
Code:
fbsetbg /path/to/pic

I checked .fehbg. Despite my having run chmod -x as root (because I happened to be updating the system at the time), the file is once again executable.

Quote:
Did you have a look in your .xinitrc ?
There is nothing in that file that references feh or backgrounds in any way.

The theme I'm using is "Operation," which is standard Fluxbox style (not a "user style") stored in /usr/share/fluxbox/styles. It has a simple theme file, rather than its own subdirectory. In the file, it sets a simple background.

Code:
$ cat Operation | grep background
background: flatcrossdiagonalgradient
background.color: rgb:4/6/8
background.colorTo: rgb:3/48/6
There is no reference to fehbg or any other background-setter in the Operation theme file.

I grepped all the files in my .fluxbox directory for references to "feh" and found none. I also grepped as root all the files in the root of /var/log and found no references to "feh."

So I'm still on square one on my quest to find what's starting feh. And, again, I have not encountered this on any other distro on which I've used Fluxbox, including Slackware (which includes Fluxbox out of the box), Debian, and Mageia.

As I said earlier, this is not a crucial problem, merely an irritating one. But I'd like to figure it out. I like doing crossword puzzles too.

I believe fbsetbg uses a "suitable wallpapersetter", which, afaiu, could also be feh.

Thanks.

Could be, but, again, I've used Fluxbox and fbsetbg for years on a number of distros, and this instance of Ubuntu MATE is the only time I've encountered such aberrant behavior.

I'll keep digging at it when the mood hits.

Update (Thursday night):

I may be onto something. Both the Magiea box and the Slackware box have fehbg present in ~/, but the Slackware box also has wmsetbg installed, and I think wmsetbg is what Fluxbox uses to manage the backgrounds. I've seen in referenced in error messages when a file in the wallpapers directory failed to load. The Ubuntu MATE box does not have wmsetbg installed and it's not in the repos. I'll check the Magiea box for the presence of wmsetbg tomorrow.

But as far as I am concerned, that will still leave the question of why the program feh is starting apparently independently of the wallpaper.sh script.

On the Mageia box, wmsetbg is not installed. I looked at the contents of .fehbg on that machine, and it references a file that has not displayed as my background for at least four months.
