I've taken TroN-0047 's advice and made a
boot repair disk . Ran it and it worked, in that windows 7 booted again. Now I intend to re-install Mint
this way. That last link also made clear why install went wrong the first time: I allowed the installer to do partitions etc. but you have to opt to do that yourself.
