CentOS 7 freezes constantly after installing guest additions

The virtualbox VM was running fine without guest additions. Installed guest additions to enable shared folders. After guest additions were installed the system immediately began locking up after a few minutes of run time.

It becomes completely unresponsive to an mouse or keyboard input and has to be killed from the VirtualBox menu.

Interesting. I removed the shared folder and the VM appears to have stabilized.

Lots of variables...
What is the host operating system?

What version of VirtualBox are you running?

As a frame of reference I have a Windows 10 host with the latest VirtualBox version 5 with both the extension pack and a CentOS 7 guest with guest additions installed but without a desktop. Shared folders works without any problems.

Several modules are installed plus the vboxadd service and there is a warning message that you might need to reboot during the installation process.
