Question withdrawn (don't know how to delete it completely)

Rather than deleting it you might want to repost it and include what you did to resolve it so others in future will find it.

Even if you deleted it because you thought it was something foolish you were doing, posting it and the resolution will likely help someone else. That is is to say, if you made a mistake then someone else is likely to make the same one and finding your post will help them.

I appreciate what you're saying, but it was a rather long and convoluted question that turned out to be very specific to my installation, and I was just being thick!

Just for the record though, the short version is that if I entered the following;-

> ls @e- [...and then tab complete...]

I got a big list of what looked like files starting with '@e-'. In reality, the tab completion was looking up my /etc/hosts file and giving me a list of URLs. I think the reason it was doing this is because I have fzf installed (which I can't recommend enough, by the way - especially if you use vim (and why wouldn't you?)).

And that's it really. The reason I posted it on this security forum is because some of the URLS were decidedly dodgy-looking! The reason for that is because I have them set in my hosts file to resolve to 0.0.0.0 (for the exact reason that they ARE dodgy!)

Hope this clears things up. As I said, I was just being thick!

Now you've done it. The Nano and EMACS fanboys will soon explain in excruciating detail "why".

P.S. Thanks for your update.
