Kylix 3 Install Problems

I'm running RedHat 8.0 and the Kylix 3 install isn't working properly. First off, I don't know if this is a distribution issue or if there is something that I am doing wrong. I am installing as root, so that permissions shouldn't be an issue.

I've done the following so far:
-----------------------
[root@localhost borpretest]# ./testsystem
Borland Kylix System Compatibility Test

Checking loader....OK
Checking kernel >= 2.2....OK
Checking libc >= 2.1.2....OK
Checking libjpeg >= 6.2.0....OK

Looks GOOD !!!
This system should be able to run Borland Kylix!
-----------------------

Then I ran the setup script:

------------------------
[root@localhost kylix3_open]# ./setup.sh

BORLAND KYLIX 3

Checking dependencies...
Kernel version >= 2.2.0....OK
Glibc version >= 2.1.2....OK
X11 Server....OK
Libjpeg version >= 6.2.0....OK
Libgtk version >= 1.2.0....OK

Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/dcc: No such file or directory
Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/bc++.msg: No such file or directory
Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/ilink.msg: No such file or directory

Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/startdelphi: No such file or
directory
Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/startkylix: No such file or directory
Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/registerkylix: No such file or directory

Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/bin/delphi: No such file or directory
Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/help/bin/hyperhelp: No such file
or directory
Can't change permissions for /usr/local/kylix3/help/hyperhelp.sh: No such file or directory
[root@localhost kylix3_open]#

--------------------------

(sorry for the clutter)

So anyway, the instructions read that I should be able to start it with "startbcb", which is fine, but it didn't create a /usr/local/kylix3/bin directory:

-------------------------
[root@localhost kylix3]# cd /usr/local/kylix3/
[root@localhost kylix3]# ls
DEPLOY license.txt PREINSTALL README uninstall
INSTALL oe.slip privacy.txt shortcuts
[root@localhost kylix3]#
--------------------------

Any suggestions?

Much appreciated,

Goldthumb

Unhappy

the same problems ocurred in my linux box.

but i see that the installer have created the folders:

/usr/local/kylix3/bin/
/usr/local/kylix3/help/
/usr/local/kylix3/lib/
....

in ROOT directory of my box

/bin
/help
/lib
.....

this seems to be a bug in the installer...

Smile Partial Fix

I talked with the install support and they are currently working on the issue, however you can run the install as a user(not root). I did this and it runs. Go into your /home/kylix3/shortcuts/kde/ and run startdelphi.desktop. It looks just like Delphi 6
Thanks

I have a copy of the Enterprise Edition

Did you download the trial version? I didn't have a license file to deal with.

The company I work for just purchased Delphi 7 and the Kylix cd was with the package and I just installed Red Hat 8.0 so I though I would check it out. I've wrote a few Websnap application in D6 and I wanted to see how they are handling the same functionality in Linux. I've wrote a few sample Websnap application with Kylix and they work great so far. Pretty kewl

Wink

Open console, and try installing with './setup.sh -m' .... 'm' switch means 'installation with tgz packages and this solves problem with RH8.

Hope that helps...

the problem with the license was that kylix expect the reg92.txt in the user home directory. If you provide another path where the txt is located it does not reconginze the license.

however i have just the kylix_open version.. enterprise is too expensive for me

the problem is rpm (or it's newer version_

OK I just digged a little bit and I found that the problem with installing kylix is becourse there is a new version and a little bit changed syntax of the rpm.
I manualy installed the rpm's and invoced main.sh script in the setup.data directory, (well I set before the correct parameters). Than I copied and changed the permisions of the start(delphi|kylix|bc) and put them in /usr/local/bin and .. I bumped into registration problem (the registration program is kreg.. but actualy it searches for some file into the disk). however I think setup.sh -m should work.
Best regards to every one

Angry Kylix OE SUCKS!

Kylix Open Edition blows chunks. It's a hacked version of Delphi that is holding itself on spit and prayers, and to make things worse, it runs on a customized WINE core. Borland didn't even bother to create a 100% native Linux IDE.

I am a big fan of Pascal and Delphi. I like the strictness and the intolerability of pascal for stupid incomprehensible code that populates most of current SourceForce projects. I also really adore Borland, both for their excellent IDE (that pioneered many ingenious debugging tools) and their commitment to legacy languages such as Pascal.

However, Kylix (the Open Edition, at least) was a major disappointment for me. I still consider Kylix OE a BETA quality product. It is still unfinished. Borland's paranoid registration routine with previous versions of Kylix made it a pain in the ass to use, so I just gave up on it. Version 3 seems like it's no better.

I understand that the Open Source community is used to half-finished junk being thrown their way and expected them to make it work (OpenOffice comes to mind), but this just crosses all boundaries. It's ridiculous! I was actually considering buying Kylix (the full version, not just the OE), but with such a great "preview" the thought doesn't even cross my mind.

You know what? I'll just wait until the FreePascal IDE matures. At least these guys don't cut corners. True, their IDE doesn't work 100%, but there are two good reasons for that:
  1. It's not a final release, still in alpha or beta stage.
  2. They're not trying to sell it, and they're not trying to cut corners on it, they really are working their behinds off on it.
