Help me in anti-noise kernel-patching!

Hello;

As some of you... I have a pentium M processor in my Dell 500m laptop. Because Dell uses very high quality equipment, I have a constant noise when the cpu is idle of 1 kHz. This drives me insane! I can't work on my laptop. There _is_ a patch that should get rid of this issue. I don't know which. Maybe some of you know.

The closest thing I have found to a patch is this:
http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/lin...12.1/0858.html

If some of you are interested in helping me, since I am by far no kernel-hacker.

Hope some of you are interested.

Anyone else having this problem?

Geert.

There are ways to get rid of this noise. On my laptop (Acer Travelmate 803LCib) it's gone as soon as I unload the acpi-modules thermal and processor. But because of this, the temperature get's higher, the fan has to work more, there much more noise,.... So it's not very pleasant to work this way.

I only know how to compile and install a kernel, but don't know how to hack that stuff.... so at this time, I just went back to a 2.4- kernel

I hope there will be a good and easy solution soon....

Ok...

Got a solution!

the noise is only at boottime there...
So take your 2.6 kernel.

edit include/asm-i386/param.h

#define Hz 1000

into

#define Hz 100

this makes it using the same Hz as 2.4

Solved it for me!
