It is closer than windoze is to a mac for sure. It shouldn't be that hard to make what works on a Mac work for Linux.

Wonder how many more Mac users there are than Linux anyway??????

Some Reason for Hope...

Maybe this story is a good sign that companies are starting to listen.

Not shockwave, but showing that companies, in this case Adobe, are starting to see the need to support Linux.

in other words, instead of signing this online petition (which i also signed, btw), i think we need to just flood macromedia with requests. with such a high demand, there's no way they can turn us down. well, they could turn us down, but it would be stupid.
I couldn't agree more. Request for it here: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform/

I also signed the petition, but I filled out the "wishform" mentioned above, and I think that will have a greater likelihood of getting shockwave on Linux than the petition. It seems most companies ignore those petitions. I've signed so many I've lost count, but none of them have panned out - and many were very simple requests that garnered 1000's of signatures.

I propose that we create a petition for Macromedia to create a Shockwave for Linux! The Flashplayer stuff we have only goes so far, and for things like playing Weezer's Hashpipe videogame on their website, I feel very left out as a Linux user! What say ye, fellow Linux users? Who's with me?

*BTW, I'm talking about a shockwave plugin and player, not necessarily something like ShockwaveMX...

Please post here as well, if you've signed, so we have some idea of how many LQ memebers are contributing.
I'm with you bro.

Again, I cannot stress enough the importance to sign their own request form in addition to the petition. In fact, if you have only time enough to sign one or the other you should make your petition in their own wishlist. Companies ignore those online petitions, but they don't ignore their own wishlists that they themselves post.

Here's the link: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform/

I signed today, No. 8260.

I wonder how many petitioners also submitted a feature request to Macromedia. I did.

I just filled it.. but you are still gonna hate me for this...

OK! So I did not get it all OSS, but it works... Just do it the pragamatic way (until Macromedia get the finger out... of course)

* Get wine (01122004) and configure it (www.winehq.org)
* Download the following:
- Mozilla Firefox for Win32 (current version 1.0.1) - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/all.html
- Shockwave and/or Authorware Player: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/...ad/alternates/
* Install these files with wine: Firefox first, then the player(s) you need.
* Before getting all excited and starting the browser, please reinstall Firefox.
* Go here:
- (If testing authorware player) http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/...rwareonly.html
- (If testing shockwave and/or flash player(s)) http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/

Have fun!

I experienced some trouble with the heavy version of shockwave + authorware (authorware didn't work propertly), so just use the light version.

Wine is still beta... so if you are a skilled code hacker give them a hand: http://www.winehq.com/

And yes... go fill the Macromedia wishform: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform/

After all, this may work, but it is still a workaround... We must make companies like Macromedia and Adobe aware of our existence and the needs we have.

Go on linux people!

Change your mind... and your OS will follow.

Do you have to buy windoze for wine to work? Even if running in Linux, I'm not messing with windoze crap. Sorry. Linux works for me. I have no use for windoze at all, period.

no wine is a win32 API

wine is like a win32 layer, totally open source... you install it, and that's it. You have the code to look at, and the API with built-in dlls which make things work (or not work...)
