Hello,
NomadBSD is probably the best desktop, next to the FreeBSD desktop. NomadBSD is ready-to-use, very easy to install, and it takes only few minutes to configure.
The kernel is Unix/BSD. It is very light and very stable. The desktop looks quite similar to a Mac. The X11/Xorg is a fork from BSD.
It is a Wayland-free and Systemd-free system. Certainly, it is Unix/BSD. The networking performances are probably the best over all operating systems, today.
The base is very light and the hardware support is excellent. NomadBSD might be the best option and best replacement to Ubuntu desktop (slow and much bloated).

Tips:
1.) To install a package:
Example to install scrot and xpaint with net connection:
Code:
pkg install scrot
pkg install xpaint
2.) To compile from source, you can use pkgsrc:
pkgsrc is a framework for managing third-party software on UNIX-like systems, currently containing over
17,900 packages
Easy to build from source. This cannot be easier: the command "make" to compile.
Example:
Code:
cd /usr/src/pkgsrc ; cd emulators/dosbox ; make
https://www.pkgsrc.org/
3.) WIFI
Add to /etc/rc.conf:
Code:
wlans_rtwn0="wlan0"
ifconfig_wlan0="WPA DHCP"
Code:
wpa_passphrase WIFIACCESS MySecretPassword > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
4.) Example of /etc/rc.conf
Code:
ifconfig_DEFAULT="DHCP"
keymap=us
ntpd_enable="YES"
ntpd_sync_on_start="YES"
sshd_enable="YES"
fusefs_enable="YES"
#apache24_enable="YES"
#allscreens_flags="-f terminus-b32"
fusefs_enable="YES"
fusefs_load="YES"
wlans_rtwn0="wlan0"
fsck_y_enable="YES"
ifconfig_ue0="dhcp"
5.) Hardware/Driver
usb wifi dongle, video, touchpad, ... everything working (eeePC, IBM Thinkpad,...)
The USB pendrive will be detected automatically and the user can mount them from the top panel bar.
