I tried using Archlinux on UEFI mode, the live distro works fine, I can reboot without any problems so I think this really is a graphics-related issue.
I'll ask for help in other forums to see if someone know what is happening here.
Optimus as you have usually requires special instructions be followed regardless of choice of distribution or DE, and use of Bumblebee or Prime drivers. Mint 19 release notes suggest improvement in this regard.
Well done. Broken ACPI is not a fun thing to work around, and occurs when vendors ship hardware with out-of-spec firmware which can cause all sorts of strange issues. Turning it off as you did is brutal but sometimes the only option. Sometimes, the vendor supplies a BIOS update to fix these kinds of issues.
