iPhone 4 Won't Mount (LMDE)

I just installed Linux Mint Debian Edition on my friend's laptop. He's new to Linux, so I've been helping him out. The biggest problem is getting his iPhone 4 to mount. On libimobiledevice.org it shows a cool video of a guy managing his iPhone with Linux thanks to libimobiledevice. libimobiledevice.org also says libimobiledevice supports the iPhone 4. But when he plugs it in, he gets an error that says:
Quote:
Unable to mount location: Unhandled Lockdown error (-5)
It's a serious issue and needs to be resolved ASAP.

***EDIT***
If this is a hardware topic, any mods can feel free to move it.

Two dumb questions:

What version of iOS is the phone running?
Did he use the Debian package to install, or did he complie from source given that there's no Mint package?

According to the Linux Mint software manager it was already installed. Since LMDE uses the Debian repository it's probably this:

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/libimobiledevice1

Something I should have noticed earlier: The version in the repository is an earlier version than the version on the website. I'll try downloading a later version. In the meantime any help on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Trying to remove libimobiledevice1 was a bad idea. I submitted a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/700195
I don't know what to do now.
