Welcome.

Check if your machine's model is listed here:

https://wiki.galliumos.org/Hardware_Compatibility

I'm not an expert by any means but just liberated two Chromebooks. You'll have to set your Chromebook to boot to developer mode and then update the firmware then you can install from the USB drive. The updating of the firmware will require removing the right screw from inside the case. Then run the unauthenticated script:

https://mrchromebox.tech/#fwscript

However, search around on the web for articles to get an idea of the process. Basically once the machine is properly prepared, it looks like you can boot any x86_64 distro from USB.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean I have to tinker with the actual hardware. Is there a video showing how?

I've only done it on two models so far, but on each I had to take off the case and remove an unlabeled screw. Prior to that, the firmware could not be overwritten. There are probably videos but the location of the screw will vary from model to model. You might have to temporarily remove around a dozen screws just to get the back case off, again depending on the model. It's doable though, just be patient and focused on each step.

Google is not about any of the goals behind FOSS any more, not for a long time.
