Kernel 4.4.204 is scheduled to release this friday with patches for this bug. Keep your eye on the stable changelog for when Pat gets this version or newer in. I'll be interested in seeing if this works on my machine, and any of yours that have been affected.

I built a generic test kernel for the 4.4.204 release candidate and its booting fine here.

Hi OXBF,

This is great news! I will wait for kernel 4.4.204 (or later) to come out as a Slackware package set, and then test this. It appears this thread can soon be marked "solved". :-)

The LTS maintainers ended up backporting a whole stack of patches to make the asus-wmi code similar to the 4.19 and newer kernels. It wasn't the original proposed fix from my last update, but its working the same now. I made sure to send our thanks to them after testing the new patch set.

Hopefully we see this solved for anyone involved (if they feel like downgrading back to the regular 4.4 kernels in 14.2).

reboot also affected

I finally had a chance to test out a 4.4.204 kernel I that had left building before holiday travels took me away from keyboard. After testing the new kernel for a bit when I got back, I am happy to report that my Asus EEE PC 1025C is now able to reboot again for the first time since kernel 4.4.172. I had the black-screen-at-boot issue for a few kernels as well, but that seemed to go away for this machine sometime around kernel 4.4.186 for unknown reasons. I cannot quite recall when or how the screen issue got fixed, because the reboot issue had started to consume my spare time and efforts.

Anyway, just happily reporting that reboot functionality has returned to my EEE 1025C as of 4.4.204, and I am as happy as a clam about it for some reason. 'Tis the season, I suppose.

On 2020/Jan/8 Mr. Volkerding released the linux-4.4.208 kernel package set. Shortly thereafter I replaced the 32 bit 4.19.x set I was using with the 32 bit 4.4.208 set, and since then the new kernel has been in active use every day. So far, I have not detected any display related problems.

So, I am going to mark this as solved.
