wireless works on ubuntu but not sabayon

as in the title, I have dual booted an acer 5220 laptop with Sabayon 4 and Ubuntu - Ubuntu was first on there and 8.10 saw my wifi card straight away, (in fact 8.4 saw it but only after conecting via ethernet to do the first round of updates) but Sabayon 4 just will not connect via wifi -Is it possible to take the working wifi part of the ubuntu installation? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? I love the look of Sabayon

we actually have the same drivers available that Ubuntu does - chances are you just have to install them or enable them. We'll need to know what type of wireless card you have to help you more.

Hi, sorry its taken a while, I have done lspci and my wireless card is listed as :

Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

for the record my laptop is an ACER 5220 with 2 gig ram and celeron 550 CPU.
it works absolutely fine in ubuntu.

update

mmmmmmmmm..... i have connected via wired ethernet successfully to see if any updates are needed. There are none appearing after an hour on line so I am assuming the answer is no.

My wifi seems to be seeing my router - in fact it absolutely is but it just keeps asking for the password for my ssid over and over again....not sure how to proceed.

Are you using wpa encryption?
I've had the same problem with Sabayon but with Ralink 2500usb wireless. Not sure if it is wpa_supplicant or network manager causing the grief.
Some people have reported that wicd network manager works better. If you can access the software repository via ethernet it might be something to try.

Thanks for the reply - unfortunately I changed the boot order in sabayons grub editor to boot ubuntu first instead of sabayon as i cant always be close enough to my router to be wired all the time and it screwed my whole system up and I was forced to reinstall Ubuntu. I am thinking twice before reinstalling sabayon now as I cant spend my sundays reinstalling a system just for fun. I would love another distro to play with that works out of the box but none have so far including mandriva, mint, suse and sabayon - all have had some issue or other with wifi - indeed so did ubuntu up until a bunch of upgrades between 8.04 and 8.10. for the record it was a wpa key that was being asked for over and over-

Shame, I was enjoying getting used to the touchpad gestures in sabayon. guess i will wait a while longer to reinstall when i am a bit more comfortable on the command line to try and sort things out

that was a networkmanager issue. Should be fixed in 4.2, unless you've got some crazy encryption on your router.

Does not work in 4.2 gnome. Same problem. Ralink 2500usb and wpa personal encryption. I did not spend a lot of time fooling with it as most other distros with 2.6.27 and up kernels work out-of-box.

Would try wicd if it was not such a pain to download it and all its dependancies via another machine.

well, I suppose not. I think I'm going to go out and buy myself one of those pesky ralink cards so that we can properly test on them, as they seem to be giving so much grief.
