OK: doublecheck that the prompt you see is like this:
username@hostname <working directory>:
so you logged in as "none", the computer is called "david" and the "~" means you are in none's home directory? So it should be: "none@david ~:" but if your name is david and you entered "none" for the computer's name, then it should be "david@none ~:" ... and if you've transposed those names without noticing then you may have transposed other things - leading to a hairy install.
please be specific about what happens when you enter a command - "nothing" means different things to different people. It is never literally "nothing", it may be you just get another command prompt right away, or after a bit, or the cursor goes away and the screen freezes - never "nothing".
