nvidia driver not found

The sabayon repos do not find identifed nvidia drivers on sab14/kde when I am using geforce6600. Is it too old for them to bother with?

I believe the 304.x version still supports geforce 6 series. Have you tried installing them?

Yes 304.x is the one it defaults to but during install the system tells me it needs version 337.25 which is not in the repos.
After the first update it hangs on reboot and will not even go to a shell.
Nvidia has a copy of this driver but nvidia does NOT say that it supports this card (geforce 6600) and it may not be compiled to suit Sabayon.
Has anyone tried this method?
