Hello there, I'm currently encountering some difficulties on installing the latest Crystal ROCK. I hope you can help me out...
The problem in brief: I'm trying to install from a SATA-DVD-drive to an IDE-HDD but the IDE-HDD is not detected.
My hardware setup looks like this:
Mainboard Gigabyte EP45-UD3 with latest BIOS "F8" installed
1 SATA-DVD Pioneer DVR-215D
1 SATA-HDD WD1600 (running WinXP, should stay as-is)
1 IDE-HDD Samsung MP0603H (where ROCK shall be installed on)
(if there's something else you want to know I'll post it)
Everything works fine under XP, as well as under Puppy Linux running off an USB-Stick; detects and mounts everything as it should.
Now here's what I tried and what happened then:
1. Boot from DVD, hit enter, start stone.
There's only one drive showing, namely "ATA" and "Western Digital". Seems like the SATA drive was mounted as hda1. However, no trace of the IDE drive.
2. start with "ROCK hda=noprobe" or "ROCK all-generic-ide=1 irqpoll".
No change.
3. Set BIOS option "AHCI" for SATA.
XP doesn't boot anymore, stone still detects SATA drive only.
4. Set BIOS option "native mode" for SATA.
stone now detects the WD drive twice - one is called "ATA" and the other one "SCSI". Still no trace of that IDE drive.
5. Disconnected SATA HDD.
stone says "Unknown type of disk - contact the developers"...
I have no idea what else to do now. Maybe everything will work fine if I use an IDE-DVD? Unfortunately I don't have one anymore. Are there any more options I should try? Your hints and tips are greatly appreciated!
So far, and thanks in advance,
Lasse
EDIT: Just installed the latest Debian "Lenny"; everything went fine. Still want to install ROCK, though.

Reason: Debian works
What do you mean by 'not detected'? I am asking because I have a disk detected by not mounted before (especially ones with NTFS partitions). What is the result of:
Code:
fdisk -l
And, can you post your /var/log/messages file (The sections relevant to the boot).

Have you tried just all-generic-ide ? Without the =1 afterward?
'cause I once had exactly the same problem with FC10, and I put
Code:
all-generic-ide
(i. e. without the =1 afterward) and then the install kernel found my HDD...

It simply doesn't show up in the list of drives that ROCK can be installed to. It was NTFS, but now it's ext3 and still not detected (just tried it again).

Only one entry: /dev/hda1 which is the WD with 160GB.

I'll try that later .

Just tried it. Works like any or none of that commands. Still only that SATA disk showing up as "ATA".
I don't know if you have solved your problem with the sata/ide drives.
I ran across your post while searching for some converter information.
I noticed that you said that you have AHCA mode turned on in BIOS. This is a NO NO NO if you are running XP. If you are running Vista you must install the Vista AHCI driver from the Vista Installation DVD.
It is in the BIOS docs but very easy to miss. I had same type of problem which was fixed with a keystroke.
AHCI is always turned off, else XP doesn't work at all. I read something about AHCI, so I switched it on to see what will happen. Unfortunately ROCK was very unimpressed about that, as I wrote above.
