DHCP server not loading dhcpd.conf
 
Hi,

First of all I am new in setting up a DHCP server, so I before posting here I have search around the web without finding a solution. I have setup a frontend with Rocks 6.2 which has only one ethernet interface. I know that the manual says that I must have two ethernet interfaces, but for now I only have one. Also I found that in this case the physical interface will be used for the public access, and a virtual interface will be used for the private access.
I followed the procedure to set up the virtual interfaces and I manage to connect to the frontend via ssh from my laptop (Using the virtual IP address). The problem is that when I run insert-ethers I get an error saying that the DHCP server is not running. When I tray to start the DHCP server it fails, and the log file gives the following:

I have changed the line 13 (hardware ethernet clusterdsp) to (hardware ethernet "MAC-ADDRESS-OF-ETHERNET-INTERFACE") but when I try to start the dhcpd.conf server it gives the same error, and the log message is the same. I don't know why the DHCP server is not loading the changes I made to the config file, I even restart the server several times with the same problem.

I'm not sure how you got the idea that you could put a name where the hardware ethernet address goes, but in almost every distro, when you install software you also install documentation which can be retrieved with the "man" command. In this case the command

man dhcpd.conf
should print over 2400 lines of documentation which includes examples for every item in the configuration. An example for your case is given below. Add the MAC in the form given and post back if you are still getting an error.

I think I didn't express myself clearly (I tend to forget some things). The dhcpd.conf with the name on it was written by the system during the installation, that's why it lookd weird for me when I opened it at first. I changed that name with the MAC address (already did that before my first post) and got the same error.

Anyhow, I managed to solve the problem. I found that I can't change the config file only, I need to change the entries on the DB of Rocks in order to change some things. So I change the MAC using the commands from rocks and the DHCP server started working. Now I have another problem. The DHCP server is listening an getting DHCP request, I used tcpdump to view the requests, but the server is not assigning IPs to the compute node. I haven't look any further on to that problem, I'll check that tomorrow.
