xwindows problem after changed window manager in RedHat 9

Yesterday, I upgraded my system from RedHat 7.0 to RedHat 9. The install went well, and everything was working fine, until I decided to go and change the window manager.

When I was using RH 7.0, I used windowmaker. So, I tried switching back to windowmaker using the system tools->more system tools->Desktop Switcher, clicked windowmaker and OK, then exited, and typed startx. Windowmaker came up, but no panel was loaded, so I could do virtually nothing; i.e. there's no way to get back to the Desktop Switcher (that I know of).

Anyhow, I tried switching some settings in some of the setup files, including .Xclients-default, and ~/.gnome/default-wm (which I switched to /usr/bin/sawfish). Now, when I try startx, it gets as far as an arrow with a blank screen, but no further. Any help?

Also, things still work fine for other accounts (root); seems it's just my personal account that's messed up.

thanks

1. Switch back the settings you made if you know what they are. A tip for the future: always make backups of the files you are going to change. You could just delete the files in your home directory if you haven't made any changes you don't mind losing. Then log out and back in.

2. Run switchdesk in a terminal to get to the desktop switcher

3. To get the panel in Window Maker, run gnome-panel from a terminal then save the session when logging out. There's an option in Window Maker but it's been a while since I used it.

fixed it

Fixed it - the file causing the problem was .Xclients-default. It wasn't loading gnome, which is why things were stalling at a blank screen.
