XFree86 4.4.0 COnfiguration Problem

I just downloaded XFree86 4.4.0 and installed it as it was mentioned at their site but it then refused to start. I also tried the old configuration but now it shows the login window. When I type the login id, the font is very large, and after providing login and pass it just loads the 'Failsafe' session and other sessions like KDE or gnome fail to start. Please help me understand and rectify this problem
