Wrong Kernel Running

I have 3 Boxes all running RH9, and all are kept up2date using RHN. All the boxes have recently updated the kernal (last few weeks), however one of the boxes always still boots from the old kernel. I know because when I go into up2date, it warns that there is a newer version of the kernel installed, and to reboot to try the new one.

However when I reboot the message persists. And just to make things easier, the boxs is not near a monitor that I can plug in, and I access it using VNC, so I can't easily watch it boot up, to see what it thinks it's running.

Is there an easy way I can uninstall the last kernel update, re-perform it, as I'm not convinced it installed correctly.

TIA

Check the settings in /boot/grub/grub.conf -- you can configure the default boot kernel there. Once the correct one works, feel free to erase the old kernel packages.

howzit

use uname -r to view what kernel u have installed

u said that u did a an up2date on the kernel if that is that case then type rpm -qa kernel this will show u the kernel rpms u have on your machine. the quetion I have did up2date install it automatically or did u download the file if u downloaded run the following cmd rpm -ivh kernel-*

also not sure if u booting from LILO or GRUB but check to see if these files are pionting to the right kernel normally found in /etc/lilo.conf or /etc/grub.conf.

Another problem it might be that you certificate for RHN has expired this will hamper u from updating your system, try downloading a new one from RHN file should be up2date*.rpm

good luck

That's got it, it was defaulting to the wrong version in GRUB. I've changed the config, and it appears to have cured it.

Thanks.

Dave.
