win xp Pro will not boot from Grub menu
 

Hi Folks:

I am completely new to linux and already I find it fascinating and problematic. Here is my problem.

I installed red hat v.9 in the free space on my 200gb HD in a dual boot setup with windows Xp pro. As I recall, I could access windows initially (at least once),; however, when I select "Dos" on the Grub menu, the opening splash screen for windows comes up, stays for about 30 secs. and then the systems reboots rather than bring up windows.

This cycle repeats itself unless I turn the computer off. I experience no problems accessing red hat linux from the Grub menu.

I haven't tried anything except to search the web for a fix. I have very important data in windows that I do not want to lose. I hope that I haven't already lost it.

As I said I am new to the linux os. Right now I am practicing the shell commands and reading all I can find on the problem I am having.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide. If I need to provide more info, keep in mind that you may have to tell me how to access and retrieve it although I am studying hard to get up to speed.

if u dont want ur data to be lost ; dont try to install anytng. SEems u have corrupted ntldr.
follow these steps

1 booot with xp cd >> choose repair in the initial screen.
2 this will end up in commnd prompt . enter admin passwd.

reboot .
call my name and boot as normally into windddddddddoz

so by just booting once to recovery mode and we fix this problem??

Hi:

The suggested fixes to my problem didn't work. After running repair and rebooting, win xp will not boot from the Grub menu. I continue to get the win xp startup splash screen and the system reboots.

I wonder if my using a PCI hard drive ATA controller card (Promise Ultra 100 TX2) to enable the use of a large WD hard drive (200gb) might be part of the problem.

Would appreciate any help I can get

Thanx for the quick response. The problem didn't happen until after I had installed red hat v.9 in a dual boot setup on the same HD.

I first used qtparted to create some free space in a partition on the Hd and then I let the red hat installation do the rest automatically.

BTW I attempted to do a repair under win xp setup using a bootable cd I made (my bios doesn't recognize my DVD drive as part of the boot sequence and my win xp os is on DVD- I am an MSDN subcriber trying to transition to linux). However, the CD throws me back to the start of the setup/repair process rather than let me complete it. Now when I try to boot to win xp from the Grub menu, I get an error message stating something to the effect that my drive or os is corrupted.

I am really getting concerned now. I don't want to lose the data I have stored under windows(Outlook, Excel, Word, etc. data files)

hi there
one more thing u can try is
that u can remoe ur grub
and see if windows works

boot from a win98 cd
at the command prompt
#fdisk /mbr
will remve grub and rewrite the windows MBR to it


or boot from a winxp/2000 cd in to recovery console
and use "fixmbr"


to reinstall grub
boot ur redhat cd in recovery console

#grub-install /dev/hda

which of ur file is corrupted when u boot windows ???

HI !!!!

if u have run parted for fmaking partitionin free sapce!!! ... u have done something that u shud not have . well if u want to take backup of ur data u can mount ur windows
partition while linux is up. u can do so by logging in with root accnt >>

# mount -t vfat /dev/ur-hard-disk-partition-no /mnt/cdrive

here cdrive is a simple directory which u can make by typing mkdir /mnt/cdrive.

if u have more windows partitions make directories and mount all those .
after mounting cd into that directory and take the backup.



For ur os related probs it seems u ( qtparted ) have made partiton on windows area because of which some files may be missing or corrupt.
If recovery console doesnt work then u might have to reinstall/ upgrade ur Windoz.
U can also opt for upgrade of XP. it wont delete anything. after upgradation u can install grub by
#grub-install /dev/ur-hd-parti.

i am having a similiar problem, that is, grub freezes... one have one harddisk, first installed xp, then fedora... fedora works fine, but screen just freezes when grub is loaded, and xp selected.. teh meesaage shown is...

rootnoverify(hd0,0)
chainloader+1

and thats it... my grub.conf has the same entry...

the thing is, i am using a laptop, which does not provide the winXP cd, only a recue disk which formats my hard disk..

is there a way out?

also, i think this is a problem with fedora core 2... or maybe grub..

if the above solution do not work out for u then
see if u have chosen LBA mode from ur bios
