Why is my screen size smaller?

My screen size is smaller than the actual size of my monitor. There is about an inch of black on every side of the screen. How can I adjust the screen size so it would fit the entire monitor?

Hi I am having this problem as well, and the buttons on my moniter have been broken for several years, and it just messed up and is crammed in this really weird position. Any ideas would be great.
