Why is my computer locking up?

I've reinstalled RH 9 many times now and consistantly if I let the computer sit overnight, it will lock up. It will do this regardless of wether someone is logged in. Also, I have a lot of problems fixing errors on the disk. When the sytem is shut down uncleanly, typically it is very hard for me to get past this stage of the boot process. I have had luck booting different kernels and fixing the filesystem and then booting normally again. When it asks for the root password to give me a prompt, the kernel panics and I must start over. I am running the newest SMP kernel. Are there any known issues? Thanks.

Any hints in your log/dmesg?

The only time I have had lockups was using a AMD processor and AGP.

AMD's official position: this is not a CPU bug
