Why all users cannot login to our RHEL 3.0 server ?

Our RHEL 3.0 AS server cannot login not on consule as root , not from ssh as any user, after the user enters the password nothing happens.
Also the default boot level should be 5 but the system loads only into level 3 with no success login,
single user is possible, all services start.
what can be done ?
we already tryed to use the former kernels but still same problem, until yesterday reboot would have resolved the problem temporary now no login at all.

Please reply the sooner the better,
the hardware is : IBM eServer 235.

Thanks D.J.

Check you diskspace (root /home, /var, /tmp and ????) and clean out the un-need junk (old rpm updates and such, remove any un-used kernels and ???) in single user mode.

The problem was resolved, it was the /var/log/audit.d/save* files
that blocked /var. these save files are not cleaned automatically.

Thanks Dita.
