vsftpd "553: Could not create file" error (once in a while)
Hello,
We recently upgraded our server upgraded from 6.7 to 7.2, since then we are getting 553: Could not create file(once in a while) if they retry it suddenly works. This would rule out any permission problems.
Here is the error message:
Tue Aug 1 23:15:42 2017 [pid 3] [ftpuser] FTP response: Client "x.x.x.x", "553 Could not create file."
Tue Aug 1 23:15:42 2017 [pid 3] [ftpuser] FAIL UPLOAD: Client "x.x.x.x", "/targetpath/logfile.txt", 0.00Kbyte/sec
Tue Aug 1 23:15:42 2017 [pid 3] [ftpuser] FTP command: Client ""x.x.x.x"", "QUIT"
Tue Aug 1 23:15:42 2017 [pid 3] [ftpuser] FTP response: Client ""x.x.x.x"", "221 Goodbye."
Is there somebody who could point me to a direction which I haven't investigated yet?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Hello,
This happens once in while, not all the time. I have checked vsftpd.conf parameters and seems to be fine. Error log does not give you much details.
You said in your first post that you recently "upgraded our server upgraded from 6.7 to 7.2". Did you actually run an in-place upgrade using the methods detailed by Red Hat: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/637583
...or did you just put in a DVD? You don't say anything about how you have vsftpd configured (from a security standpoint), but there are many things that could cause a 553 error. https://access.redhat.com/discussions/686463
With selinux being at the top of that list. In-place upgrades are never a really good thing to do, in my opinion. Have seen far too many problems with UID numbers getting changed, old libraries along with new, and features you had off get turned back on. Fresh installations are always best. All that being said, you're using RHEL 7; have you contacted Red Hat support, since you're paying for RHEL, RIGHT???? Do you have the patches/bugfixes related to VSFTPD on RHEL7 loaded???
Thanks for the response, It was in-place upgrade and we have not contacted to RHEL yet. I will create a ticket with them and let you know the response.
