useradd problems - permission denied on /home/* for new users

I try and add new users as root, for example I just tried the following:

useradd atest
passwd atest
su - atest

and I get the following output:

su: warning: cannot change directory to /home/atest: Permission denied
-bash: /home/atest/.bash_profile: Permission denied
-bash-2.05b$

Sorry for the noobish question, but I cant figure this out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but by default, doesn't adding a user give them a /home/* directory? If so, why am I being denied access to this directory? One other quick, but kinda unimportant question for me right now is, why am I being given this bash-2.05b shell for regular users? What is the 'default' for root (which I am probably using now, looks like [root@localhost root]#)?

Thanks to anyone who reads this, please, keep up the great work here linuxquestions!

do a
mkdir /home/<username>
chown -R <username>:users /home/<username>

Btw, make sure you add the -d /home/<username> option to the useradd command. Do a man useradd for more information.
