upgrade to rh9 killed kde


after scouring the forums and treying a few things - i am still stumped
i upgraded from rh8 to 9 and all the sudden i get a kdeinit failed screnn in the top rioght corner when i try to use the gui. i can swith to another console screen with cntrl alt f1. i try to startx from there and again failed.
i even went as far as unistalling kde andf doing a fresh install from the discs, but again nothing. when running redhat-config-xfree86, it poped up once - i probed monitor changed the resution ans then the "monitor out of range" pops up

anyone familiar with this one?
