Question updating xfree on rh9 by compiling from source

Hello guys,
I work daily in my older pentium2 machine and i thinked that i would get a faster system if i compile the xfree86 system by myself and i try to upgrade my existing xfree with this new one.

I'm downloading now the sources (very slowly, sighh) and i wanted feedback about my idea.

It's difficult to build?
It's difficult to replace the existing and keep all working in my rh9?

Before you waste your time on the most recent xfree version, check out x.org. The x.org sources were branched from xfree before the recent license changes. If you're recompiling from scratch anyway, it might be worth using the x.org sources since most distros will probably be using them by default from now on.

It shouldn't be too difficult to build provided that you have all the appropriate development tools installed. I don't know if things like gcc come installed by default in Red Hat, so it might be worth a look.

If your configuration works under your current xfree, it shouldn't need much adjustment for either updated xfree or x.org. The only thing that might be worrying is rpm dependencies. I'm not sure how well RH copes with having some packages installed using rpm and some installed from source.

Having both binaries and source buildings installed is a complete mess. I tried it with some programs.

Now i do the upgrade with the apt-get for redhat and i have a more powerful machine.

Maybe some day i will try to build my own xorg rpm
