Updating Php & mysql


I have installed php & mysql but its only version 3 and i want to update to the latest version how i do that. I am compleet noob, i can only use console (root) no interface :S ....i hope somebody can make a step for step turturial

As far as I know, you can simply download and ./configure, make, make install the libraries. If you had the old programs and libraries installed in the default locations, I THINK that doing this should simply install the new ones over the old ones. No guarantee though, I have never tried this and I am only conjecturing that it will work like this.
