Updating kernel with up2date
 

Has anybody done this without too many problems? I'm currently using the 2.4.18-3 kernel that shipped with RH 7.3 .I haven't patched , or modified it in any way so I don't see any problems with doing this, but I'm not clairvoyant :-) .
Actually I'm not too hot to update my current kernel since everything I have on my system works well with what I have, but Santa Claus just might bring me some new toy that might require a new kernel to get working.

If wanted u may dnlwd new kernel from the following link if required: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2003-263.html#Red Hat Linux 7.3.

Once u have dnlwd the rpm and not src.rpm because with the later u have to rebuild the src code. Use this cmd in the following manner rpm -ivh new-kernel.rpm :tisk: use rpm -Uvh this will delete and remove config files of your old kernel it´s a good idea to keep old settings just in case u find in compatibilities with new kernel or if new kernel doesn't load

I use up2date all the time to update my kernel, Actually though it updated successfully seven times, I never rebooted. It always leaves the running kernel installed. It does replace the kernel-source if it's rpm installed. It also replaces the other last updated kernel if it's not running.

Finally after 258 days there was a massive power failure at my house and the new kernel was booted. Worked fine

Thanks guys! I took the plunge and updated my kernel with RPM and it actually worked! I had to run Xconfigurator and reinstall nvidia drivers to get X back , but that was the only hitch, everything works (even the joystick) without any hair pulling.

I keep the nvidia source around for when I change kernels. If you just install the driver again from there you should not need to do anything to the X config.
