Angry Up2date will not allow me to overwrite newer packages? PROBLEM!!

I need to have Redhat overwrite some files that I updated from Red Carpet which have managed to hose my X/GDM/WM installation so that the greeter no longer comes up, and X does not work correctly. Up2date (from the command line tty1) will not allow an --installall for the redhat-linux-i386-8.0 channel, saying "Test install failed because of package conflicts:
package XFree86-libs-4.3.0-2.90.43 (which is newer than XFree86-libs-4.2.1-23) is already installed.

I would even be happy to uninstall XFree86, gdm, etc if I could get it working again. Someone please help and either tell me how to make up2date overwrite newer files on an --installall, or tell me how to remove all of the rpms to do with XFree86 (and the dependencies) so that I can get X working on this machine again. Many thanks and cheers.

Been there, cried a lot too..

Have you reconfigured up2date?
do up2date --configure
Look for the option forceInstall, set it to yes..

Or if it still resists, jump into /var/spool/up2date and force install the package from the command line,
rpm -i --force --oldpackage XFree86-libs-4.2.1-23.***.rpm

You may still have some unmet dependencies, but do them 1 by one & you'll be ok.
