unable to login from console f1 to f6. But able to login into GUI in f7.
Hi,
I am using rhel 5.3. I am using windows 2003 server 32-bit (the processor is 64 bit. AMD athlon x2). I have installed vmware and installed rhel5.3 64 bit on top of it. Now i am able to login as root from GUI mode (f7 console), but unable to login in text console from f1 to f6. I checked the /etc/securetty. But there was nothing unusual there. I think udev is causing this problem, since google said so. I cant find where the udev.rules file is located that google searches are taking about. How do i enable root login in f1-6 console.
Root login is/should be enabled by default. I never heard of this issue (on regular RHEL). So I would say that issue is with WMVare (keyboeard shortcuts?).
Maybe you should try VirtualBox, I like it better then WMVare.
Thank you AlucardZero for pointing me to /var/log/secure. I put tail -f of that file and try out the login problem. It seems the PAM module has gone corrupt. Below is the log after the simulation.
Code:
Apr 22 19:22:14 nandionline login: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib/security/pam_limits.so)
Apr 22 19:22:14 nandionline login: PAM [error: /lib/security/pam_limits.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]
Apr 22 19:22:14 nandionline login: PAM adding faulty module: /lib/security/pam_limits.so
Apr 22 19:22:15 nandionline login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0)
Apr 22 19:22:15 nandionline login: Module is unknown
I try to Google and fix this problem. As we now know where is the issue it should be pretty straight forward to fix it. Thank you very much for point to secure file. I will also post the fix i made once i get the solution.
