Two monitors in Redhat Tikanga 5.6 - X Server Fails

Hello friends,

I am not very familiar with Redhat or Linux in general.

I am trying to get two monitors to run on a government computer that came pre-loaded with Redhat 5.6 ... I had no input into the version. When I follow instructions here:

http://www.techotopia.com/index.php/...tiple_Monitors

(The best I could find for my version) it tells me I need to log out, fine. I do and nothing ever comes back. A blue screen error comes up that says "Failed to start the X server (your grapical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?" So the only way to get the desktop back is to go back to the one monitor setup. I have tried different resolutions and have tried "generic" vs. my actual monitor type.

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Thank you for your help.

Is this a computer you are using at work ?
or
one you got used from a gov. office and are using at home

i ask because RHEL 5.6 is a bit old , and red hat is not a free operating system
You need to have a paid license and register it with red hat
RHEL5.8 is the current in the old 5 series
If this computer has not been upgraded to 5.8( form 5.6) then it has not received any SECURITY updates in over a year.
( With the exception of back porting them to the old 5.6 - and that is not cheep )

if this is a box you are using in a govt. office your tech support / your system admin will have the needed info

if not ?????

you might not be able to install any needed software needed to fix this .

Some information on the hardware will help
"sis3.sh" is a good start if you have no idea what is in the computer
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sysinfosh/

it is an interactive shell script for normal basic linux commands
You will need to be root to run it

using two monitors normally needs a 3d card ( and the driver )

option "5" in the script lists the PCI devices
one of them is the video
or use the terminal
Code:

su -
lspci | grep VGA

and that will output the graphics card/ chip if there is one
