1: Your camera may or may not be natively supported under RH9. Mine is, luckily, but it's a different model. I'm not sure if your model is supported you'd probably have to do a search.

It seems the most common answer to digital camera / linux problems is to buy a card reader (cheap at most any PC hardware store). Do a google search for supported linux card readers & you should be ok.

Another thing you can try is plugging in your camera & setting it to 'transfer' or 'view' mode. At this point you'll have to find out where that device (/dev) is found. You can do a 'dmesg' at the command prompt and see if it shows a listing. Mine is listed as /dev/sda1.

Let me know if you find it, I'll give you more instructions as far as copying the images.

2: RH9 comes native with some cd-burning software. The one I use for archiving is just the defaults ///:burn. If you pop in a blank CD this program should pop up. All you need to do at this point is drag-drop your files into the folder. The only thing you have to make sure to do is not go over the total size for the CDR. It doesn't have a fancy status bar like Nero or those other fancy programs.

3: useful commands? There are a gazillion commands you can use. I guess it depends on what you're trying to do. Do you know the basics like 'ls', 'mkdir', 'useradd', etc? Or do you know ANY commands?

1) menu>graphics>digital camera tool
never used it myself, but start there

2) Xcdroast ( get the newest version or you'll have to login as root to burn )
bunch of GUI burners installed
comandline " cdrecord " works well

Make sure you get the Doc iso !

A stupid thing to say, perhaps....

I have just completed (more or less) a RH9 shrike i386 install myself.

I am new to this distro, and the first thing that struck me is the APPARENT lack of the howto docs and so on in the places I'd come to expect if after years of slackware installing !

If you've grabbed and burned the ISO's as opposed to buying the boxed cd's, please remember to go back and get the documentation iso. The 100Mb one named ???????.US.iso, when loaded into your cd-rom, will prompt you to install its bits and pieces. Take their advice!

After you do that, the desktop will have some new menus including a shortcut to what rh call documentation suitable for the complete beginner. No I haven't looked at it all myself yet but it may give you the overview you're looking for.

As to the device specifics, can't help you there, regrettably.

wow thanx this is alot of support for such a n00b post

i'll go over the links you all provided and try to find that iso with the documentation that someone suggested but if your right and the best way to read it is to buy a card reader then i'll stick to a dual boot between windows just to get my pictures

btw the network card wont install and im unsure of how to install the drivers? anyone have any tutorials for installing new network hardware?

Well this IS one I learned about the hard way !

The first thing I'm going to say (and predictably too) is to check out the "Ethernet-HOWTO" which you can get from the Linux Documentation project site (www.tldp.org ??).

Next thing I'm going to say is "what sort of card is it and what IRQ and I/O addresses does it use".

Many cards are Plug and Play, and linux, like windows, will sort them out. Some, particularly older ones, are not.

I have just such a card in one of my linux boxes, and I have to add some details in a file /etc/modules.conf to make it work. The specifics of how to do that, if you have to, are in the HOWTO I mentioned.

Read through that document, and if you're still confused as hell, come back with some info on your card and someone should be able to sort you out.

1 Try mounting the device (usually /dev/sda1) as a block device:
Code:
$ mkdir camera
$ su
password:
# mount /dev/sda1 camera
# exit
$ cd camera
$ ls
This should list you the contents of the camera. Mind you that you would be accessing it as mass storage device rather than a digi camera per se

2 Yoy may find very useful the included Gnome Toaster. Mind you that you should be root to run it correctly.

3 What do you mean?? you should make a search on google about "basic linux commands" or take a look at the BASH manual.
Code:
$ yelp
Look under Man pages under the Applications category for bash(1). It may be rather confusing at first, but give it a try
