Taking the RHCT exam next month, looking for advice
 

Hello everyone. This is my first post to this forum.

I am taking the RHCT next month in Atlanta, GA. and I am looking for some advice. Mostly, what "style" of test is it? Multiple choice, or a lab style exam?

I have already taken RH033 coursework using Redhat's E-learning, (actually passed all of the module exams with a 92 average grade). I am currently working on RH133 coursework (E-learning as well), and doing pretty good on it. But, I am a little nervous about taking the exam.

Please understand, I am not really looking for "exam cram" or "cheat sheet" stuff, but merely advice from folks that have taken the RHCT or RHCE to help prepare me for what to expect when I go in October. It would be nice to know what I should really focus on for study.

Can you guys give me some pointers as what to concentrate on such as troubleshooting, installation, networking and security?

Some background about me, I have been using Debian for quite a while. I am a PC Technician by career (mostly Windows) but I am jockeying for a position with my companies Server group. We primarily run Redhat for our Linux based servers and AIX on some others. I decided to work towards a Redhat certification to help with moving to the server group. I am really enjoying working with Redhat, and I have installed CentOS 5.5 on a machine at home to learn from.

If I have posted this question in the wrong area of the forums, or if these types of questions are not appropriate for the site I apologize. I havent been able to find a good source of Redhat support since I do not have a RHN account, and I am merely looking for a place where Redhat guys hangout and are willing to help answer a few questions for someone like me.

Hi there,
I have taken RHCE two times so far, and guess what I failed both times.
But that doesn't mean it is Hard to pass, I made some mistakes....in the RHCE portion of the exam.

Now coming to your next point...
Look you are going for RHCT exam only so i dont kno if these apply to you also. They apply to RHCE exam...
1) there is no installation part.
2)it is lab based exam not objective type exam.
3)for rhct part dont worry about Security.
4)you should be able to make your pc member of your domain e.g example.com
5)you should kno how to set static ip, how toset gateway and dns.

Thanks for the replies. Is there anything specific to practice? like bash command chaining, or application type stuff like installing and configging a LAMP stack?

The exam is based on the RHCT syllabus and only what is on the syllabus. Forget about anything else, it will not be on the examination. If you have done the official coursework and training, you have a reasonable chance of passing at your first attempt. As somebody else said - practice, practice, practice. But also practice to complete tasks within 2 to 3 minutes. You have to be able to do things very fast and accurately to pass the exam.
