Startup process in Fedora core 2

Hi
I am running Fedora Core 2 on my IBM laptop. This laptop is installed with Pentium M 1.4 Ghz and 512MB of Ram. I noticed that when I start KDE, it eats a lot of my memory, usually about 450MB. I have looked at the KDE System Guard and found that a lot of processes were running and many of them I dont know for what and were started when KDE loaded.

Can anybody explain to me how I can reduce the number of processes running without compromise the system stability as I am new to Linux ?

Thanks

try to find services or kde system guard or gnome system monitoring ...
then u can do man on the particular service or google for it to know more about it ...
there are some services like ftpd, apache(httpd), samba(smbd) which u might be able to close easily ... lookout for services/process names ending in 'd' they are usually server services , some of them can be turned off ... while others shudnt be ... put up ur process list and tell what u want to do with ur linux box.. more help will be on the way
