starting iptables fails with rhl9 and kernel 2.6.1.

I was proud of myself for finally successfully compiling my own kernel. I built a 2.6.1 from the generic source code and it comes up nicely, for the most part, but it rags about starting iptables. [Failed] is what I get.

Does anyone have good pointers? This may be something very obvious, so please be patient... when I shut down the new kernel, it seems to "stop" iptables, although it complains about not being able to start it.

I'd like to use the new kernel, because I get at least double hard disk speed (kernel 2.4.20 won't put my hdparm setting beyond udma2, while the new one gives udma6), but I want my firewall up.

What options did you enable on the Device Drivers-> Networking Support-> Networking Options-> Network packet filtering-> IP: Netfilter Configuration menu? It's probable safest to just say yes to them all if you're not sure which ones you need.

I am also having problems with IPTables myself...
The weird thing is I get different problems everytime I compile the kernel

There is one odd one which I encountered recently, the IPTables work fine in kernel 2.6.4, I was so happy since I compiled the filters as modules...
But when I went back to my old (original) kernel, I get IPTable failures! haha

Andrew: I agree with your method since I got it to work last time
