sound on sony VAIO PCG-GRZ515G

i have Redhat 7.3 installed and i can't get the system bell sounds to wrok or an audio cd to play
and produce sound. when i first installed linux, at least the system sound was working. now, a couple of months later, no sound. could i have turned off a sound option by accident ?

the soundcard seems to be in good condition as i have no problem producing sound in windows. i've seen some info on a "AudioCD Reader" input plugin for XMMS, but i'm not sure this is what i need.

Does anyone have any ideas ? would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, claire
