Slow accessing RedHat server files

Running a RH 9.0 server without ACL but with users and groups created on the server and is up to date. This matches the Win2K domain. Users can log in to the network (Win based) and access their files but the first time you do it, it just seems to take forever.

I thought maybe accessing from a RH 9.0 workstation would be different but it seems worse. When going to Network Servers and then browsing to each resource it takes at least 30 seconds.

I have created static paths to the server's IP that I am accessing. Listed them in the Hosts, created the user with appropriate rights, etc. No difference either way, with or without these entries.

Eventually it will open the files, but there isn't any "snap" to it like I might expect. It's so slow in fact that I really can't use the workstation as a workstation. The user would be calling me over every time they tried to access a file and it took forever to open.

Any insight would be appreciated.

You could run top while the problem is ocurring and see what is using the system resources during that time. See:
man top
