Serious Problem -- RTFM not possible.

Ok so here's the problem. I'm running Red Hat 9 (that's a problem all to itself, but I'm not going to get into that here) and last night I used their up2date client to update my system. This seemed like a good idea and I would like to tell you all what I DLed and installed, but my present problem precludes that. Instead of running the default view for RedHat (Bluecurve I think it's called, anyway) I'm running Blackbox. After I installed all the packages that RH9 DLed for me, I restarted my computer and when it booted back up I was unable to see any text (if you don't know what I'm talking about I can't describe it better--take a look at my Screenshot at
http://student.bard.edu/~jl672/ss.png . (yes, I realize as well how cliche that background has become...) Anyway, that's "gnome-system-monitor" that's running with the red and green lines and above that the RH "User Mount Tools." As you can see, there is nothing showing up where the text is supposed to. I get this at the Login Screen as well and under all users. Anyone know what the hll happened to my computer? Of the packages that were installed I remember the following:

ethereal
a kernel update*
glib

*the kernel is installed but I am not booted into it currently, GRUB gave me two options to boot into linux so I choose the old kernel (2.4.18 I believe--it's been a while since I actually payed attn to that boot screen.)

So any help would be greatly appreciated since I can't really make most of the programs on the comp function at this point....

Also, if you look at the bottom left corner of the s.s. you'll see that I'm having troubles starting gaim and gftp. Anyone know what's going on there? This has happened before, but I can't remember how I fixed it that time.

Again, thanks.
