Scroll wheel of mouse - How to make it work? Redhat 9
 

Runnning Redhat 9 Using KDE - how to make my logitech serial scroll wheel mouse work?...it does not run on its own...by default the middle button is not working, only right/left-click is working - how does one scroll using the wheel?

I tried many stunts but failed

Any help? thanks in advance.

Make sure your /etc/X11/XF86Config has the following in it:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
EndSection

well now my red hat linux does not detect mouse or it detect keyboard...

I thought you were never coming back. Sorry to see you did. Firstly, I am a unix admin of 15 years. Secondly, I gave you very good advice on how to get the scroll wheel working on a redhat system. Thirdly, there was no joke, I get pissed off when I take the time to help someone so that they don't have to struggle at something only to receive a response that you gave.

Based on the little information you provided, the answer you recieved was very good. How you edited you file or what you did is your problem. Take some advice...learn how to communicate in life. All you had to say was you ran into a problem and I would have continued to help you.

And...you know what, forget it...some other fool can deal with you, I'm done...I shouldn;t even have responded to you....

Redhat 9 Shrike using logitech scroll mouse (Serial)/ KDE desktop -

Logged in as root
Copied the following in /etc/X11/XF86Config

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
EndSection

Restarted the PC - and it stopped detecting mouse and keyboard both :(

I don't know if this will help you but my XF86Config-4 mouse section looks like this:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"
Option "EmulateWheel" "yes"
Option "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
EndSection

It's likely that the reason the mouse stopped working is because you've told it to use the wrong "Device". Try changing:
Option "Device" "..."
to what it was before stingx told you to change it.
I've got my mouse connected through USB, so Device "/dev/mouse" worked best for me. If I use the good old mouse port (like I did before) I used Device "/dev/psaux"

One more thing...
Is it possible that when you changed the identifier of the mouse to "Mouse0", as stingx recommended, that you forgot to change the server layout section:

With my mouse configuration like in the above post my server layout looks like this:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "layout1"
InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
Screen "screen1"
EndSection

Notice that InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" tells XFree86 (your X server) which mouse to use (if you have a few mouse configurations in the same file - for some reason).

If you take note of my original response, what he was supposed to check for was what I had in bolded type. Nowhere did I state he should change the identifier of the mouse. Specifically, all that is ultimately important for the scroll to work is the line:

Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Now if he came back, missus the childlike attitude, I would have gladly helped him out further. See this is why I don't think Linux is for everyone or at least people that need to have everything spelled out to the letter. I made, mistakenly, an assumption that he knew not to change his mouse device and to simply check the other settings. Not in my wildest imagination did I assume he would cut and paste that example into his own config file. Now, if he came back and stated what he did without the dramatics, it would have been apparent and help would have been offered. I guess he did learn something, though, from this...backup a file before editing it.

I'm surprised that nobody has responded to this harsh response from stingx.
I hope a lot more people than me were offended by this.

Now I haven't been a system administrator for 15 years so I just base my answers on how I would like to be answered, which means a lot of explanation on how things work and why...

But I can perhaps agree with you about help vs. childlike behavior. The thing is umeshz had edited away some offensive comments (like itsjustme noticed and I never saw). I wouldn't have helped him if he was being rude and offensive. (You could have answered in a more sophisticated and polite way... but that's another story).

My point with this post (to all newbies): If you want help, act like a grown up and ask politely, then people will help (stingx has already said this, I'm just emphasizing).

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but it is likely that English is not the first language of Umeshz. Therefore, the posts may not be in a format you personally find acceptable.

With that in mind, Stingx's first response was not very helpful. If he had explained more fully what he thought should be done, the remainder of the posts may not have been necessary. His post was unneeded and franly reflects badly on this site.

Here's a tip - if you don't want to help someone after a few tries, just stop posting. Unsubscribe from the thread and move on. We have a large number of members from all around the world and someone is likely to post who is prepared to be patient.

My apologies. I wouldn't hang around here if I didn't like offering up help. Sometimes you have a bad day at work, you know how it goes. I shouldn't have snapped at the guy even though his responses, which he so conveniently edited out to make him look innocent, were just ridiculous. Anyway...done with this thread. Next time I'll just choose not to pursue the issue.
