Screen Saver hanging

Hey guys,

I did a search of the web and no avail. I just installed Redhat 9 and gnome and I am finding that my screensaver is hanging. Have any of you had this problem? Is so, how did you get around it?

Thanks
-Mike

ALT+CTRL+F1 to tty1
login and kill the X
then disable that particular screen-saver

Did you get crash because of this?

I experienced similar problem before.
The screen goes black and it "looks" like in power save mode. But you hit the keyboard or click the mouse just get no response.

Eventually I installed nVidia linux driver and disable screen-saver and the problem does not happen again.

I also enable vncserver with XDMCP so that if the same problem happened again, I can vnc to it and reboot remotely.

I had a similar problem and found that the problem was with the 3D screen savers. Eliminating them solved my problem. I've since limited myself to just a black screen with no problems.

I'm also having problems with /usr/X11R6/lib/tls/libGL crashing. I think this is related to my screen saver problem. The interesting thing is that C programs like glxgears seem to work OK, but tools run via python (like boa, eric, vtk, etc.) all crash.

I suspect the problem is that I have a voodoo5 video card. That's why the problem went away when one poster swicthed video cards.

Anyhow, that's my experience. I'm going to try compiling and installing Mesa separately and see if that fixes things; but if anyone else has some useful experience, I'd like to hear it.

OK one for the record. Building MesaLib-5.0.2 and installing it over the existing XFree86-Mesa libraries fixes my problem. I haven't tried the screensavers yet. I also had to repoint the links in /usr/lib/tls and /usr/X11R6/lib/tls.

I'm off to redhat's Bugzilla.
