hi all,
I installed RHEL5 in x86... Now i need the rsh service enabled.. But the service is not running.... I installed rsh-0.17-37-e15.i386.rpm which is the rsh server... I dont see any rsh, rlogin files in /etc/xinetd.d.. When i try rsh it shows the error " connection refused through port 544" and " no route to host" error... The rshd daemon is not running.. How to start rsh now..? What may be the error?
saigiridhar,
Please answer doublejoon's Q about why you need rsh, I'm sure s/he asked it out of concern for the security of your system. Edit: Remove reference to "ssh" -- should be "rsh" throughout post.
Current wisdom is that telnet, rsh, & all their un-encrypted relatives should (almost) never be used. We would love to see a counter example.
Also, if you're going to continue to use rsh, for whatever reason, expect your use of it to be questioned any time you post about it. It might be well to avoid the well intentioned "Why do you use that?" by including a short reason w/ the original post; even if it's a brief "Don't ask, I really have to use it."

Reason: typo: change "ssh" to "rsh"
I can't speak for saigiridhar, however in my case I'm running into a similar situation... For me it's because of a high end CFD software that needs access to rsh in order to send jobs out to other machines.
When trying to run a program I get:
----------------------------------------------------------------
[me@machine232 ~]$ rsh xxx.xxx.xxx.175 -l me -n ls
connect to address xxx.xxx.xxx.175 port 544: Connection refused
Trying krb4 rsh...
connect to address xxx.xxx.xxx.175 port 544: Connection refused
trying normal rsh (/usr/bin/rsh)
Couldn't get address for your host (xxx.xxx.xxx.232)
----------------------------------------------------------------
But if I try:
----------------------------------------------------------------
[me@machine232 ~]$ rsh xxx.xxx.xxx.175 -l me
connect to address xxx.xxx.xxx.175 port 544: Connection refused
Trying krb4 rsh...
connect to address xxx.xxx.xxx.175 port 544: Connection refused
trying normal rsh (/usr/bin/rlogin)
rlogin: Host address mismatch.
Password:
----------------------------------------------------------------
I can enter my pass and get logged in. So it seems that it's partially setup... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Actually i needed to use MPI however i did it with passwordless ssh. But now i'm requiring it as i need to integrate SGE(a grid engine tool) with MPI hence i need rsh badly right now....
I am running into the same problems as the other 2. my reasons are my own for why. however, acid_krewpie, you didn't entirely explain what the issue could be.
Pleease disable the firewall/SELINUX for do the follows
#setup //Here you have select firewall configuration and disable both. like

I am also facing the same problem and none of the solution above is working for me. I am using a tool which uses rsh feature and I configured rsh successfully. It was working fine but suddenly it stopped working. Getting the error "connection refused". I am using rhel6.
Install "rsh-server" package
Make sure you add the hostname/ip address in the ~/.rhosts file
You also need to add port 975 on the firewall
Also edit the /etc/pam.d/rsh AND /etc/pam.d/rlogin and add/modify
auth sufficient pam_rhosts_auth.so promiscuous
