Root's account has been disable by system administrator

I am an advanced computer user, but not in linux so please be gentle :)

I am having issues with my Root account.

The machine was working fine the last time i used it. Now when I try to log into the linux machine with the root account, it says that the system administrator has disabled your account. I am not on a network and I am the administrator. I have not touch the account information for the Root.

Is there an easy way to recover the root account?

I am on Red Hat 9.

Sure is, unless you have protected this way :) boot your system in a single-user mode, and you have root login (administrator rights). Then change the root password to make sure it works,

Code:

[root@localhost]# passwd
and there you go. then reboot the machine and see if it worked. And remember, as long as you can boot in a single-user mode, you can change the root password - actually, you can do anything. So it might be a good idea to protect the system so you can't boot into single-user mode just like that (bootloader password is one help...)

You can try to acess your system with the rescue system contained on the CD/DVD.

well its not the password that's the problem, it's the fact that it's disabled. So if i can get into s-u mode, how do I get the root account to be active again. Like I said I'm a total :newbie: at this so step by step is great :D
