RHN Critical Information notice
In the RHN Alert Notification Tool, this Critical Information tab showed up with the following message:

The applet has been unable to access the following information sources in its last attempts: RHN @

Any ideas on how to fix this? I assume it means something is not working?

Please help.

I get this a lot too. I have no idea what it I use yum for updating.

Well I installed yum today and will check it out. It still bothers me that the Critical Information message showed up and I have no clue how to resolve it....

Ah the wacky wonder that is up2date. I've been with Red Hat/Fedora since Red Hat 9 and I've never experienced a solid version of up2date. I'm sure there's a reason, but I really don't have the will to investigate it when yum works fine for me.

Actually I've been using apt-get the last few days for updates and it seems to work pretty well. Is there a preference for yum over apt or other?

I recently discussed this with someone else.

apt-get: works much faster when you want to install something, but the package list needs to be updated periodically.

yum: accesses the mirrors everytime you need to install something or update so it works much slower, but always has the latest lists.

The difference is almost negligable since the best repositories support both. It really depends on how you use it. If you do a lot of installing, I'd use apt. However, if you only run the update periodically, yum might be a better bet.
