RHEL6, Libraries, and Package Groups

We recently started installing our new servers with RHEL6 (earlier servers were using a mix of RHEL4 and RHEL5) and I have run into an issue that is more of an annoyance than anything, but I'd like to try to resolve it.

Basically, we have some libraries that are used by our database (Filepro) that are not being installed with the base system or have the wrong version installed.(64-bit vs. 32-bit)

Two of the libraries (libxml2 and libstdc++) are installed as part of the base system, but only the 64-bit versions are installed for the 64-bit version of RHEL6 (As one would expect, it IS the 64-bit version, after all) Filepro is 32-bit and looks specifically for the 32-bit versions. Simply linking to the 64-bit version doesn't work, either. The 32-bit version must be installed in order for it to work.

What I'm wondering is if I can force the installation to install the 32-bit versions as well, or if I'd have to revert to the 32-bit version for that. To future-proof the systems, I'd prefer to keep them on the 64-bit version, but I could "get away" with the 32-bit version for the foreseeable future, if I need to.

The third library in question (libodbc) is not part of the base system and I cannot seem to find what package group option (assuming there IS one) installs it. Does anyone know if Red Hat has a detailed list of what packages get installed with each package group? I need to find the one that installs unixODBC, it seems. I'm sure it will have to be 32-bit, as well.

I know I can resolve this by registering the system with RHN and using YUM, but I'd like to be able to install these packages at system load, to make things a little more neat. That, and it will help with some locations, where these systems will have no access to RHN, due to restricted or no internet access. I do not control all of the firewalls in some of the locations these systems will go in and I'm doing remote VM installs on a more frequent basis. I would prefer not to install the RPMs of the install media after installation, but can do that, if it is necessary. (YUM ruins you for dependency hell).

I can copy the contents of the DVD over to the local system and make it a YUM repository but, again, I'd like to avoid doing that.

Is any of this possible?

Sorry for the rambling post. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to LQ.

A lot of libraries are available as 32bits :
'libstdc++.i686' : # yum install libstdc++.i686

'unixODBC' is on the list too ...
http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/lin...t/en/os/SRPMS/
.. You may have to ask Redhat, to know which repo section to add for unixODBC.
