Angry RHEL5 mdadm sofware raid prob

Hola,
Im trying to software raid0 2x 3ware raid6 cards. The 3ware rhel5 install disk did not work (os software riad1 on mobo) so Im using mdadm to create the sotware raid.

mdadm --create /dev/md3 auto=yes --level0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdc /dev/sdd

comes back with error:
/dev/md3 no such devices exist

I manually added it
mknod /dev/md3
and also manually added /dev/md3 to mdadm.conf - this allowed the creation/mounting of the raid, but upon reboot the device disappears (from mdadm.conf too).

arrggghhhh

any help?
I've done this with rhel4 and never had probs

-J
